Milan Weekly presents an exclusive interview with Irina Pyleva, a trailblazing figure in the fashion industry. From her early passion for artistic expression to becoming the creative director of Corsettery, Irina’s journey is a testament to her commitment to innovation and global exploration. In this interview, she shares insights into her career, pivotal experiences, creative inspirations, and the unique blend of tradition and cutting-edge ethos that sets Milan apart in the world of fashion.

What initially drew you to your current field, and how has your journey evolved since then?

From the outset, my journey in the fashion industry was kindled by a deep-seated passion for artistic expression and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of clothing. It was the allure of influencing emotions, boosting confidence, and shaping individual identity through design that initially drew me into this captivating realm.

As my journey unfolded, my early fascination evolved into a commitment to crafting designs that transcend conventional boundaries. Influenced by diverse cultures, art, and history, I sought to weave narratives through my creations, creating a unique signature style that told stories of its own.

Over the years, my career has been punctuated by significant milestones, from my initial explorations in the industry to assuming pivotal roles as a creative director for esteemed fashion brands such as Corsettery and Roberta Lavicci. Each phase has been characterized by artistic growth and innovation.

Corsettery, renowned globally for its commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship, stands as a testament to my evolving journey. From its roots as a brand synonymous with authentic bespoke corsets to branching into diverse directions, including the establishment of a fashion tech department, my vision for Corsettery has continuously pushed the boundaries of the fashion landscape.

My creative process involves meticulous attention to the client’s individuality when designing bespoke fit corsets. Cultural influences, diverse inspirations, and a commitment to inclusivity guide my designs, creating pieces that celebrate global diversity.

Can you share a pivotal experience that significantly influenced your career or personal growth?

Undoubtedly, the decision to study couture and patterning in Italy stands out as a pivotal experience that profoundly shaped both my career and personal growth. This deliberate choice was not merely an academic pursuit; it represented a strategic immersion into the heart of a fashion legacy.

What hidden talents or hobbies do you have that might surprise people?

I do not know if it is a talent, but one of my cherished hobbies is singing Italian Barocco arias. It’s a passion that I indulge in, not just for personal enjoyment, but as a delightful pastime to share with friends. The expressive beauty of these arias allows me to immerse myself in the rich cultural tapestry of Italian music, adding an unexpected layer to my interests beyond the world of fashion. Also just recently, I’ve embarked on an exciting hobby—training for flights on the plane, maybe it will lead to something bigger than just training.

How do you stay creatively inspired and motivated in your work?

Last months my two most favorite art eras that inspire me most of all are the Italian Renaissance especially the timeless works of Botticelli, and the enchanting world of Russian ballet during the mid-20th century. Botticelli’s masterpieces epitomize classical elegance, and their deep archetypical senses provide an enduring source of inspiration in my creative journey.

Delving into the captivating realm of Russian ballet, especially during the era of the Ballets Russes, is a source of perpetual fascination. My admiration extends to the avant-garde spirit, groundbreaking choreography, and interdisciplinary collaborations championed by Sergei Diaghilev.

These two cherished art eras, one rooted in the Renaissance ideals of Italy and the other in the transformative movements of Russian ballet, form the cornerstone of my creative inspiration. They represent a continuous dialogue between classical grace and avant-garde innovation, ensuring that my work remains a dynamic synthesis of timeless traditions and the evolving language of artistic expression.

Is there a tradition or custom from your upbringing that still holds a special place in your life?

Certainly, a recent and cherished tradition in my life involves a decade of global travels with my daughter. This tradition is more than just exploring new places; it’s a dynamic classroom of art, architecture, and cultural adventures. From the Louvre in Paris to the sands of Sahara, each journey is a shared experience, fostering curiosity, open-mindedness, and a deep appreciation for the diversity of our world. It’s a tradition that transcends sightseeing, becoming a celebration of human culture and a lasting bond forged through exploration.

What has been the most challenging project or situation in your career, and how did you navigate it?

One the most challenging project in my career was the seamless integration of our traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology in our fashion line and transformation of a small online store into a worldwide corset brand. Balancing heritage with innovation demanded a delicate dance, requiring extensive research, collaboration, and meticulous planning. Navigating this challenge involved fostering a culture of adaptability within the team, staying attuned to market trends, and ensuring a harmonious blend of artisanal skill and technological advancements. Ultimately, the successful navigation of this complexity not only elevated our brand but also reinforced our commitment to pushing boundaries while staying true to our roots.

Who has been a major influence or mentor in your life, and what lessons have they imparted?

My most significant influences and mentors have undeniably been my Mom and Dad. They imparted a fundamental understanding of economics, business, and the principles of honest work. Their guidance went beyond theoretical lessons, shaping my character with hands-on experiences in sales traditions. Their unwavering commitment to integrity, hard work, and the pursuit of excellence serves as the compass guiding my professional journey. In their footsteps, I’ve learned that success is not just measured in financial gains but in the positive impact one can make through dedicated and principled work.

Can you recount a turning point or milestone in your career that was particularly significant?

One of the main turning points in my career was the decision to expand Corsettery operations from the U.S. market to a global scale. This transformative choice necessitated a paradigm shift, demanding the creation of impeccable quality standards, the management of larger and diverse teams, and the meticulous crafting of perfect patterns. The challenges were immense, but the growth that followed underscored the significance of this milestone, pushing both our brand and my professional journey to new heights.

In your opinion, what are the essential qualities or skills needed to succeed in your industry?

I believe, success hinges on a multifaceted skill set. Creativity is crucial for envisioning innovative designs, while adaptability ensures relevance in a dynamic market. A keen business acumen is essential for strategic decision-making. Leadership skills are paramount for guiding teams through complex projects.

Moreover, effective communication and negotiation skills are indispensable. The ability to articulate ideas clearly, collaborate seamlessly within teams, and negotiate mutually beneficial partnerships contribute significantly to success. Furthermore, staying attuned to industry shifts, fostering innovation, and maintaining a steadfast commitment to quality are key elements for sustained success in the dynamic landscape of our industry.

What book, or movie has significantly shaped your worldview or professional approach?

The movie “La Grande Bellezza” and the book “Au Bonheur des Dames” by Émile Zola have been transformative influences, shaping both my worldview and professional approach. “La Grande Bellezza,” directed by Paolo Sorrentino, has instilled a deep appreciation for life’s complexities and the pursuit of beauty, guiding me to infuse purpose and aesthetics into my endeavors.

Simultaneously, Zola’s “Au Bonheur des Dames” has provided profound insights into the world of commerce and the human psyche. This literary masterpiece, exploring the rise of department stores in 19th-century Paris, has influenced my understanding of consumerism, business dynamics, and the intricate relationships between commerce and society.

Together, these artistic works have formed a rich tapestry of inspiration, encouraging me to seek the profound in the seemingly mundane, infuse purpose into my creations, and appreciate the intricate interplay of art, culture, and human experience in both personal and professional spheres.

What piece of advice would you offer to someone aspiring to make a mark in your field?

If I had a right to give advice, I would say to relentlessly keep working, accumulating experience, building a dynamic team, and curating a robust portfolio. The journey is a continuous evolution, and each project, challenge, and collaboration contributes to your growth. Embrace a mindset of perpetual learning, stay attuned to industry trends, and foster a passion for innovation. In this ever-evolving landscape, the combination of experience, a strong team, and a diverse portfolio becomes the formula for leaving an indelible mark in the creative realm.

How do you find balance between your professional responsibilities and personal well-being?

I cultivate a sense of balance through a well-structured schedule and routine. Short-term planning ensures that daily tasks are efficiently managed, while long-term planning provides a strategic vision for both my professional and personal aspirations. This deliberate organization allows me to navigate the demands of my career without compromising the essential elements of personal well-being, creating a harmonious synergy between professional and private spheres.

If you could collaborate with anyone, past or present, in your field, who would it be and why?

For a dream collaboration in my field, I’d choose Karl Lagerfeld. His unparalleled genius in both fashion and business is an inspiration. Collaborating with Lagerfeld would offer a unique opportunity to merge creative innovation with strategic acumen, enriching my work with the brilliance that defined his legendary career.

Looking toward the future, what are your major goals or aspirations, both personally and professionally?

Looking ahead, my major professional goals revolve around expanding Corsettery’s footprint globally. This entails not only reaching new countries but also refining our designs, enhancing visual aesthetics, and fostering impactful collaborations. Simultaneously, on a personal level, I’m driven to indulge my wanderlust, prioritizing more travel experiences. Equally crucial is my commitment to caring for and fostering meaningful connections with the people I love, ensuring a balanced and purposeful journey between my professional and personal aspirations.

What are your thoughts on Milan as a hub for creativity and innovation, and how do you think it compares to other major cities in your field?

Milan holds a special place in my perspective. It seamlessly blends tradition with a cutting-edge ethos, fostering a dynamic atmosphere for fashion and design. While Paris epitomizes elegance, London radiates diversity, and Rome breathes history into fashion, Milan stands out for its unique fusion of sophistication and modernity. Each city contributes a distinctive brushstroke to the global canvas of creativity, but Milan’s free spirit and commitment to innovation make it a compelling force in the world of fashion.
